Every year a number of schools across Michigan participate in the Salmon in the Classroom program, a year-long educational program where teachers receive fertilized salmon eggs from a Michigan Department of Natural Resources fish hatchery in the fall, then the classrooms watch them hatch, and feed and raise them through the spring. At the end of every spring, the young salmon are released into a local river in hopes of the fish reaching one of the Great Lakes. This year, over 180 classrooms participated in the program.
