The Outdoor Discovery Center is one of the many places in Michigan where people can embrace and explore wildlife. The preserve has 155 acres of land, and through animal ambassadors, scenic trails, and educational programs, they work to teach the community how to preserve the wildlife for future generations. One of the many animals they have on site include a Rocky Mountain Elk herd. The Rocky Mountain Elk still live in the state of Michigan, however they are not native to the state. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources introduced the elk around 1918, and the population grew steadily overtime. However due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting, the population had dropped by the 1970s. Since then, thanks to carefully crafted wildlife management plans the elk population in Michigan continues to grow.
